Hello my friends and welcome to Whiskey Buns Rabbitry! My name is Kimberly Carey and I am creating a sustainable homestead one step at a time.

I hope that within these pages you find hope in darkness, courage in fear, love amidst hate, faith under fire, lean not unto your own self but God’s Word, self reliance when the world has none, your integrity intact, your morals at a standard of grace, patience at the gate of frustration, compassion for all God’s creatures and humor to get you through each day.

By week I am Secretary to our county sheriff’s department. By night and weekends I am a dog mom to eight crazy dachshunds, wife, mother, huntress, videographer, writer, photographer, gardener, chef, home decorator and designer, restorer of antiques, lover of Jesus and now the proud owner of a starter Rabbitry. And on the horizon is the possibility of yummy milk goats.

I believe in being as self reliant as the world will let me. And getting older does begin to limit one’s self, but I keep trying. My God always provides whether it’s plants for food or medicine, animals for our table, clothes for our backs or a roof over our head. The devastation of losing my only son to suicide in 2019 was almost more than I could bear on a minute by minute basis. My hope was crushed and I had to learn to fully rely on God because I want nothing standing in the way of me going to heaven with him and Jesus for all eternity. July of 2024 makes five years and it’s still difficult, but God heals the broken hearted. He just keeps sending me more animals for a farm. My side humor is spilling over!

This year wasn’t our best harvest of deer for the freezer. So, I began brainstorming ideas for a sustainable food source. I enjoy the butchering and packaging process and I find it mentally relaxing. But it’s hard on the hands. I came across a few people on YouTube that were raising rabbits for meat, show and companionship and thought it looked like something I could keep producing on a regular basis. As arthritis sets in, rabbits seem to be a more reasonable food source for me to work up.

I came across a woman one evening that raised rabbits for meat, show and companionship. She built a rocking Rabbitry and raised beds for gardens. She totally inspired me. I decided if she could, then I could too. I decided my Rabbitry is going under the old carport we have and I was able to clean a third out the same weekend I purchased four New Zealand rabbits. Two white does, one soft light grey doe and a chocolate Buck. They are only eight weeks old. By their fourth to fifth month they will be ready to breed.

We worked on securing them a pen and enclosing it in kennel panels to keep out other critters. So the plans for the Rabbitry are brewing and will expand over time. Plans to pull all my weenie dogs off unsafe commercial dogfood can’t come soon enough. Silver Fox rabbits and Flemish Giants have also caught my eye. So, I’m entertaining the idea to add them as well. Who knows, maybe even show a rabbit or two. The Silver Fox coats are beautiful and would make beautiful pelts for wall quilts and such. I eventually want a completely self sustaining system from animals to gardens to us. God will provide and we put in the effort to continue the circle of life. They will live their best farm life and be loved for their entire existence.
Please join us in all our adventures. I hope they inspire and encourage you to keep going and living your best life!

Genesis 1:28 New King James Version

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
